It has been argued that media has resulted in a generation of couch potatoes who rarely engage in outdoor activities. Conversely, media has brought about a positive sense of globalization and has been a good base for education. Children of today learn languages faster thanks to media. They may however be exposed to rated content which overall chews on the moral fiber of society. Checks and balances therefore have to be better enforced to protect little eyes and ears.

Most of the media houses whether big or small has got some standing. They are all inclined towards one political party. This is mainly because of the fact that sometimes these media houses are indirectly owned or funded by politicians. The situation is far worse in developing or underdeveloped countries. News are fabricated and shown to people. Investigative journalism has taken a backseat in developed countries as well. Journalists are releasing press releases which favor their clients. This new concept of releasing client favouring press releases is termed as ‘Churnalism’. PR has become a new tool of marketing communication. Celebrities, businessmen, politicians hire PR agencies to publish information so as to increase their goodwill in the market.

Not so the mass media. When talking about the role of the mass media, it has to be borne in mind that the mass media do not operate in isolation. They operate in societies and for societies and all societies have their own cultures or, increasingly in modern times, are multicultural, with a variety of cultures, ethnicities and trends. So the mass media that are evolving and their functioning are much more complex today than ever before.
